The Skills to Thrive

Developing the Skills to Thrive

Confidence doesn’t grow in comfort. It grows when students are purposefully challenged. What do those challenges look like? Rigorous, active academics that include differentiated math pathways that stretch their thinking, science that moves beyond the textbook, Field Studies that take learning into the woods and the bay, and athletics that sharpen discipline and grit. Our students meet real challenges head-on.
At Highland, academics are active, applied, and alive. Students don’t just read about science; they run experiments that rival those done in advanced science labs. They don’t just study literature; they perform Shakespeare for their community.

They don’t just learn grade-level math; they choose from differentiated pathways that challenge them at the right level. And they take learning into the woods, the bay, and beyond the classroom walls, because life doesn’t happen at a desk.

Thriving at Highland is about more than grades. Athletics, leadership, wellness, clubs, the arts... all of it matters. Our goal is to build disciplined thinkers, bold creators, and resilient competitors, so that by the time Highland students graduate, they don’t wonder if they can handle what’s next.  They know they can.

List of 5 items.

  • Demanding Courses, Balanced Rigor

Highland is academically serious. We offer Honors and AP courses, nationally-recognized STEM programs, and writing-intensive humanities. But we're never high-stress or rigid. Students are pushed to stretch, supported by teachers who know them well, and challenged in ways that build confidence rather than pressure.
  • Foundational Mastery

From raising trout and testing stream water in sixth-grade science to acting out Shakespeare before seeing it performed professionally, Highland blends traditional depth with experiential learning so students don’t just cover material; they understand it, apply it, and own it.
  • Future-Ready Intellect

Through small classes, differentiated pathways, and meaningful mentorships, Highland students graduate prepared not only for selective colleges but for a complex world that demands critical thinking, communication, and character.
  • Learning Outside the Classroom

Field Studies, overnight trips, service projects, internships, and cross-grade leadership experiences ensure students practice adaptability, collaboration, and resilience in real environments, building skills that last far beyond graduation.
  • Well-Rounded "Pillars"

At Highland, academics, arts, and athletics aren’t competing priorities. They are equally valued pathways for growth, whether a student is competing on one of 20 varsity teams, performing on the stage in the Rice Theater, or designing a robotics solution that brings engineering to life.

The journey starts here

We measure success by who our students become. Come see how a culture of trust, challenge, and community helps the leaders of tomorrow develop the skills to thrive, the confidence to lead, and the drive to serve.
