Meet our leadership

Great schools aren't built by accident. They're built by people who choose to invest in something bigger than themselves.

Highland's Board of Trustees is made up of those people. Alumni who walked these halls. Current parents who trust us with their children. Alumni parents who watched Highland shape who their kids became. They are professionals in business, finance, law, health sciences, education, and beyond. Each brings hard-earned expertise to the table on behalf of our students and families.
They set Highland's long-term vision and strategy. They ensure sound financial management and careful stewardship of every resource. They select, support, and evaluate the Head of School. And they do all of it as volunteers, giving of their time, their expertise, and their personal philanthropy because they believe in what Highland is building.

United by our mission

What unites them isn't a title. It's a shared commitment to one mission: preparing students to thrive, lead, and serve in a diverse and dynamic world.

That's the work behind the work. While students step boldly into their own journeys, the Board makes sure the path is steady, the resources are real, and the promise holds year after year, class after class.

Marshall Doeller, Trustee Emeritus

Marshall Doeller graduated from Highland School as an 8th grader in 1967 and served on the Board of Trustees from 1992 until 2004. As Chairman of the Board from 1997 to 2004, he was instrumental in implementing an ambitious 10-year Master Plan that included the construction of Highland’s Upper School, which officially opened in 1996. His two daughters, Kate and Michelle, are Highland alumna.
 

William A. Hazel Sr., Trustee Emeritus

Prior to his death in 2012, Mr. Hazel had an active life, founding one of Northern Virginia's largest excavation and development businesses, sitting on many Boards, and supporting educational projects all across the area. His longtime support of Highland School permitted major changes to our development; most notably, he provided the lead gift to establish the William A. Hazel Family Lower School - now the only LEED Silver-certified educational facility in Fauquier County. His legacy will continue for years to come.
 

Paul G. Rice, Trustee Emeritus

Paul Rice served on the Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2012. He was Chairman of the Board from 2006 to 2012 and, along with his wife Gina, was instrumental in the design and construction of the Highland Center for the Arts and The Rice Theater. He received the Founders Award in 2012 for leadership and service that have shaped the School. His two daughters, Lindsay and Ally, graduated from Highland.

Jody Warfield, Trustee Emeritus

Jody Warfield served on the Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2021. She served as Chair of the Board from 2022 to 2025. Her multiple accomplishments include navigating the School through a successful Head of School search in 2022 and developing an enhanced strategic focus and governance practices at the Board level. Jody’s substantial generosity and exceptional professional expertise in communications, marketing, and fundraising launched many important initiatives that continue to empower Highland’s future. These include the ongoing Campaign for People, Legacy 100 Society for planned giving, and numerous leadership gifts and endowments.  Her son, Luke, graduated from Highland in 2020.
