THE ARTS IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

The visual arts, performing arts, and music are all an essential part of the Middle School experience at Highland School. Each provides our students with opportunities to learn more about themselves while building both confidence and competence.

In Middle School, visual arts is a chance to explore

The goal of the Visual Arts in Highland's Middle School is to work with each student to develop sharp, creative skills that are refined throughout their development at Highland School. To achieve this, our Middle School students are introduced to all types of artistic mediums from the basic elements of art, to drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramics.

Students explore various artists throughout history to gain insight into their artwork. We provide an environment that is both challenging and encouraging, committed to the philosophy that every child can succeed.

More complex class plays in fifth and sixth grades

A cornerstone of Highland education is to offer programs to develop special talents in every student. As an extension of this philosophy, students in grades five and six participate in grade-level plays each year. Students in grades five through eight can audition to participate in the Middle School play, which is held in The Highland Center for the Arts.

Every spring, students have an opportunity to participate in a competitive audition process and spend six weeks preparing for performances for their peers, families, and the Warrenton community. With performances in The Rice Theater located in the Highland Center for the Arts, some recent shows include Alice in Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time, and Willy Wonka.

Music programs in the Middle School

The Middle School music program at Highland seeks to mine and develop the enormous musical potential of children this age and to sharpen their singing, playing, and listening skills with age-appropriate songs, instrumental pieces, games, and listening activities. The fifth and sixth grades are the culmination of Highland’s unique curriculum which starts in the third grade.
