Meet Lise Hicklin
Lower School Director Lise Hicklin believes wholeheartedly in Highland's philosophy in which "teachers consider the changing needs of every child and determine what is needed to develop every child to his or her potential."
Lise Hicklin, Highland’s Lower School Director, taught second grade for twenty years and was Head of Highland’s Primary School before assuming her current position in 2005. Mrs. Hicklin earned a B.S. from East Tennessee State University and a M.S. from Radford University. She taught in Roanoke for eight years before moving to Highland. She remains certified to teach and often pops into a classroom when needed to support or offer enrichment to students.
Hicklin creates special atmosphere for each student
“Our program develops well-educated, confident, thoughtful and happy students through strong academics, enriching special area classes, fine and performing arts opportunities and community service. What I love about our Lower School curriculum is that we‘re able to provide a beautiful balance between academic challenges and special area offerings that round out the educational experience,” Mrs. Hicklin remarked.
“Using best practices for teaching, students thrive in an environment where they are supported and challenged by teachers who see their students as unique individuals and who truly care about them.” – Lise Hicklin
Accessible, approachable, and genuine
Making herself highly accessible, Mrs. Hicklin is not only seen by students, parents and visitors in the classrooms, but also on the sports fields, in the theater, playing her guitar at assemblies, and greeting students each morning at carpool dropoff.
She has had a passion for teaching children her entire life and maintains, “Children are so honest. To be in their company is incredibly refreshing.”
