Harry Potter Camp

Attention young witches and wizards! You have been chosen for a special summer session at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Get sorted into your house and pick up your wand and school supplies. Create magical potions. Participate in exciting classes like Charms, Transfiguration, Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, Herbology, and Ancient Runes.

Learn to duel in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Receive flying lessons and play quidditch, the wizarding world’s most beloved sport. As you journey through Harry’s magical world, you will earn points for the House Cup and gain the knowledge necessary to pass your O.W.L.’s (Ordinary Wizarding Level Exams) at the end of term.

It is strongly recommended that students have read at least the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, before arriving at camp. Students who attended last year’s Harry Potter Camp are welcome to return this year and expand their magical knowledge through new activities!

Science Lover?

In this exciting science camp, students will participate in simple science labs, and experiment with fun, hands-on resources. We will start big, and begin with a tour of our galaxy and solar and lunar systems.  We will then focus on our unique planet, Earth, and observe phenomena relating to plants and animals. Finally, we get microscopic and examine and create our own atoms and molecules. We will delve deeper into the marvels of our world with ‘lab-work’, science dvds, and outdoor excursions.

Mythology Camp

"Myth is not about something that never happened, but about something that happens over and over again."  – Solon, 6th c BCE

The word “mythology” comes from two Greek roots, "mythos", or word/speech, and "logos", or word/reasoning. “Mythos” changed over time to mean legends which were told through the oral tradition. Over time, “Logos” also took on new meanings, like “study”. All words have rich and meaningful stories. Just like the word “mythology” itself, this summer camp will focus on all the great stories about the Greek/Roman gods and heroes.

Each day students will hear the stories (whether through video, storytime, or reading) of the timeless Greek gods and heroes who have influenced so much of our art and literature. They will then develop their understanding of these featured gods and heroes each day by taking on art projects and playing them in short skits, complete with props and costumes. After the first day, students will be ready to compete against each other in games that test their knowledge, so short “certamen”-style games will be a small part of Tuesday through Friday’s activities. Topics include the constellations, Greek heroes, Greek and Roman gods, and Roman numerals. Students will also leave the camp with a basic knowledge of the Latin and Greek bases and prefixes, which pertain to mythological topics, in order to help their understanding of the English language.

Time: 8:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Age: Rising grades 5-9
Location: Upper School Latin Room

Lego WeDo

Join us as we combine robotics and Legos to explore Lego WeDo, a robotics hardware and software program designed for young children. Students will have an opportunity to construct models using computerized step-by-step directions, which are enhanced by a click and drag program to activate Lego motors and sensors. We will also be exploring the WeDo 2.0 kits and designing robots we can control via iPad. Students can take what they already know about pulleys, gears, motors and sensors to design their own interactive creations! Come join us as we explore the world of Lego WeDo!

Mathematical Musical Marimbas

Somebody once said, “Music, mathematics, and art are considered the pinnacles of human creativity.” During the week-long Mathematical Musical Marimbars summer camp, students will experience connections between these three facets. Each participant will create his or her own personal “marimbar”, a single electronic marimba bar tuned to produce alto, tenor, or bass notes and designed especially for this camp by Dave Harmon of Create It Lab (www.createitlab.org). During the construction of the marimbar, students will discover the mathematical relationship between the bar length and the fundamental frequency of the bar. Connections between fundamental frequency and pitch will also be explored. Furthermore, aspects of electronics will be incorporated as students learn how electronic marimbas (and our marimbars) rely on piezoelectric disks to magnify the sounds of these instruments. By the end of the week, students will work in small teams to create and perform a short piece as we host our very on “Battle of the Marimbar Bands” competition.
