Highland School is the culmination of dreams,
plans, and commitments that have steadily filled its sails
for 80 years. Though the founders of the School
could not have imagined the size and complexity of the current
Highland community, they established a tradition of excellence
that has made every step taken since the founding a step
forward.
From
a faculty of two and a student body of nine, since 1928
the School has grown into a faculty and staff of over 100
people, a student body approaching 560, a facility of 40
acres and over 130,000 square feet under roof. But the fundamental
nature of the School has remained unchanged: the commitment
to producing the well-rounded individual who has experienced
not only the pleasure of academic accomplishment, but also
the challenges of discovering who they are and what they
value by expressing themselves through the fine and performing
arts, drama, sports, and student government.
The Highland student will not have a narrow world view: they will
have experienced a universe of different ideas through guest
lecturers, field trips, discussions with classmates and
teachers of diverse backgrounds, and exposure to books,
movies and plays with disparate viewpoints.
The
same principles that marked the School in its first days
(an emphasis on skill building and personal development,
and the timing of academic advances to the child's developmental
progress) mark the School today, with the added benefit
of an Upper School that carries those assets forward into
an intense but balanced college preparatory program.
