People say “poetry is life.” Another metaphor is poetry as a meal—that poems are conceived and created then feasted upon in the way that a banquet unites people in times of celebration or grief. This course will provide a structure-and hopefully inspiration-for students to write poetry and share it in a safe context, exploring both the writer’s workshop and performance reading models. To explore a variety of methods of writing poetry, we will read some published poem, listen to music, and take short excursions to different environments that prime our senses. Whether you are a seasoned or budding poet or are just interested in words, enjoy this chance to wallow in language away from a standard classroom setting.
