School is more than a collection of facilities and staff,
it is a vibrant community of students, staff, parents, alumni,
and engaged members of the local public. The Highland community
seeks to serve not just the School's academic purposes,
but to model the concept of "community citizen."
The School serves the local community in three main ways. First,
the students all participate in community service projects that
increase in involvement as they grow older. Second, the School opens
up its facilities for use by local community organizations. Third,
the School sponsors plays, musical performances and camps that the
community at large is invited to attend.
One of the key elements in making Highland School a successful
community is the work put in by the parents and grandparents of
the students. Whether through the Highland School Parents' Association,
or as individuals helping coach a team or coming in to read to one
of the Lower School practices, the parents are the glue that holds
the Highland community together.
