"The mission of Highland School is to provide a demanding academic program to develop the skills and character essential for students to meet the challenges of college and leadership in the twenty-first century."

NEW PK 3/4 Program

In response to a great deal of interest, Highland School is expanding its PK program! Beginning September 2008, Highland will offer two PK options: PK 3/4 and PK 4/5. The new configuration will allow Highland to serve a greater population while broadening our developmentally-based programs. An Open House on Wednesday, February 20 will focus solely on the new PK 3/4 program. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower/Middle School Library. The application deadline for PK 3/4 will be Friday, February 29, 2008.

PK 3/4 will be taught by Terry Norris (see bio below) and her assistant, Cindy Andreoni. The program is designed for students ages 3 to 4 and will run from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. five days a week. Students must be 3 by the end of September to enroll.

PK 4/5, our current PK program, will still be taught by Cathy Boyce (see bio below) and her assistant, Linda Shirocky. This program is designed for students ages 4 to 5 and will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. five days a week. Students must be 4 by the end of September to enroll.

Before- and after-care will be available for each PK program covering the hours from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Please mark your calendar for the upcoming Open Houses and please contact the Admission Office with questions! The Admission Office may be reached at 540-878-2740 or cpryor@highlandschool.org .

FACULTY BIOS

Terry Norris, PK 3/4

Mrs. Norris has taught for more than 30 years; 13 of those years at Highland. With a degree in Early Childhood Education from George Mason University, Mrs. Norris is state-certified and has amassed more than 50 credits in related coursework. She has taught 3, 4 and 5 year-olds in public, independent schools, and Head Start programs. In addition to teaching children, Mrs. Norris has taught adults at NOVA.

Mrs. Norris believes Highland "caters to the whole, individual child, using the latest innovations in building math, reading, writing and social skills." Her goal is "to develop solid thinking, problem solving, and cooperation skills" in her students while also teaching them to be "caring individuals."

Cathy Boyce, PK 4/5

Mrs. Boyce has 27 years of teaching experience in the public, private and independent sectors. She joined our faculty 14 years ago to teach and help establish the PK program at Highland. Mrs. Boyce earned her degree in Early Childhood Education at Radford University and received her Masters of Education at the University of Virginia. Mrs. Boyce is state-certified and has extensive experience teaching Preschool through Grade 1. Prior to Highland, Mrs. Boyce taught in the Diocese of Arlington and in the Loudoun County Public School system. She serves on the Board of Fauquier Community Action Committee, which runs Head Start and Bright Stars, as well as other programs such as Energy Share and Home Repair for at-risk families.

Mrs. Boyce believes the strength of the Highland PK program is the "developmentally appropriate curriculum, small class size and numerous special area classes." She especially enjoys teaching this age because, "It is great to see their little eyes sparkle when they learn new things!"
