"The mission of Highland School is to provide a demanding academic program to develop the skills and character essential for students to meet the challenges of college and leadership in the twenty-first century."

What is the Learning Center?  The Learning Center is a program for students in Grades PK–4 that provides support and remediation.  In grades 5-12, support services are provided.

What kind of remediation is available in grades PK-4?  Remediation is available in reading, using the Barton Reading Program, and in math.

What kinds of support are provided for the students in grades 5-12?  In these grades there is remedial assistance in math; homework and project assistance in all subject areas; and an alternative test and quiz environment.

How can a student access this resource?  In grades PK-4 eligibility is determined by school testing and teacher recommendations.  In grades 5-12 students must have documentation in order to receive services.

What kind of documentation is required?  Documentation refers to a full psycho-educational battery that has been done by a public school system or private provider.  This documentation clearly points out the student’s strengths as well as weaknesses and suggests accommodations that might be made so that the student can be successful.

How can parents secure this documentation?  Parents may contact Fauquier County Public Schools Special Education Department  or the same department of the school system in the county in which you reside.  You would request a full evaluation for your child.  The school system will then tell you what the procedures will be.  Your second option is to secure the services of a private evaluator who is knowledgeable about psycho-educational evaluation.  The Learning Center Director can make suggestions for you.

What happens while this evaluation is taking place?  If there is evidence that the child needs support, that support will be provided in the interim.

Will teachers know about the student’s needs?  Yes.  At the beginning of the school year, profiles are provided to teachers which outline the child’s strengths, areas of weakness, and accommodations that must be made in the classroom.

Will the student have an IEP (individualized education plan) or a 504 Plan?  No.  Highland provides an accommodation plan that outlines the information above.

What becomes of the student’s evaluation and who can access it?  The evaluation becomes a part of the student’s confidential file that is kept in a secured location.  Only persons who have “a need to know” may access that file.
