Overview
The academic program at Highland School is designed to provide
as complete and cohesive an educational experience from PK
to Grade 12 as possible while remaining accessible to students entering
at any grade. The core of the academic program is the development
of the student's skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and analysis.
As the student rises through the grades, specific knowledge becomes
an increasingly important part of the academic program, but the
focus never shifts from creating active lifelong learners.
The responsibility for the implementation of the academic program
is split between the School-wide department chairs and the division
heads. The department chairs are responsible for determining what
topics and skills are taught at each grade level, and for ensuring
that their department's curriculum remains integrated and age-appropriate.
The division heads are responsible for ensuring that every teacher
in their division follows the curriculum and uses the latest in
good teaching practices.
