Learning, No Boundaries
Parents Association
All Highland parents are members of the Parents Association. Its board is made up of one parent representative for each grade and an executive committee. This model allows for open lines of communication and for all parents to have a peer as a point of contact at school. The board meets monthly so that the representatives can stay up to date on relevant information throughout the year. There are three general membership meetings per year.
It is pretty incredible that for a school of the size of Highland the Parent's Association, yearly, continues to give back in a meaningful financial manner. The 2008-09 Parents Association donated over $45,000 to a variety of "wish list" needs throughout the school. Conference speakers for staff, new books for Lower and Middle School students, a Harkness Table for the new Upper School Humanities/ Instructional Technology Wing, funding for the Enkijape School, and nearly $17,000 in financial aid for existing families are a few of the ways in which the parents have been able to provide for the Highland community.
Throughout the year, the Parents Association organizes and hosts a variety of events. From social gatherings like the back to school picnics, the The Parents Association of Highland School mother/son and father/daughter events, to more service oriented events like the Head Start Holiday Book Drive and running the Hawk's Nest, to fundraising efforts like gift wrap sales and serving lunch on Mondays and Fridays are all avenues in which the Parents Association is able to support the School.
During the 2009-2010 school year, the Parents Association hopes to sustain the momentum that previous boards have initiated. We anticipate supporting the Highland community by helping make it the finest school for our student body. We encourage all of you to get involved with Parents Association activities. Whether you take on a weekly task or bring a dish to pass at the Homecoming picnic, any effort will be greatly appreciated and it will make a difference in our students' school environment.
Sincerely,
Katrine Pendleton,
President
