Service Projects

Below are some of our current projects for the 2009-10 year.

Light the Night Walk
In October, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society hosts its annual Light the Night walk.Since 2004, Highland has participated in this event in honor of one of our own, Senior Heather Latham, who has and is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Students and families are invited to join Team Hawks for Heather to raise money and awareness and to participate in the walk.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Fauquier Community Action Coalition holds a food drive annually to provide Thanksgiving Dinner for families in their service database, including Head Start families. Highland has supported this project for more than 15 years by contributing needed items and by having student volunteers help sort and stack our donation at the Food Cupboard. Thanks to the generosity of our families, Highland has been recognized for contributing more food than all other areas schools combined.

Holiday Philanthropy
Institutionally, Highland has supported the following community programs for several years during the holiday season to make a difference for hundreds of families in Fauquier County. Mitten Tree and Book Drive for Head Start/Bright Stars; Adopt-A-Foster-Child Gift Drive, and Gum Drop Square for the Partnership for Warrenton.

Highland Annual Family Service Day
As we continue to develop the tradition of service and selflessness in our students, Highland sponsors an annual day of service in April, in conjunction with Global and National Youth Service Day. All families in the Highland community are invited to participate on one of several project benefiting local non-profit organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Fauquier Family Shelter, Fauquier Food Bank, Community Farm, and Fauquier Parks and Recreation.

Mary's Family
In 2007, Highland's Key Club was awarded a grant from the Piedmont Community Foundation to start a music program at Mary's Family Respite day sites for children with special needs. Students volunteer each month by assisting theses children with various arts and craft activities and games, and by performing and playing music with them.

Empty Bowls Soup Dinner
Each spring, Highland's Key Club and Ceramics classes partner to host an annual soup dinner to raise money and awareness to fight hunger in the local community. For a small donation, Highland families are invited to enjoy an array of soups donated by local restaurants and to choose their favorite bowls from a wide selection handmade by Highland students. All proceeds benefit a local hunger organization and the Key Club annual trip into Washington, DC to serve the homeless.

Blood Drive
Annually, during the week preceding Highland's Family Service Day, Highland hosts a blood drive for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. A "Dream Team" of student volunteers coordinates every aspect of the drive: working with Red Cross representatives, promoting the event, recruiting blood donors and volunteers, and setting up the drive.
