Learning, No Boundaries
About Service Learning
Highland School's service learning program strives to facilitate personal growth and community awareness in all students by engaging them in meeting real needs. Through service, students have the opportunity to broaden their perspective and range of experiences, develop a sense of civic responsibility, integrity and compassion, and recognize their individual strengths and leadership potential. Highland offers service experiences that include a range of involvement: from materials and donation drives, to awareness-raising events and programs, and direct service experiences. The Director of Experiential and Service Learning oversees all-school service initiatives, serves as the liaison between Highland and partner agencies in the community, and works with division directors and faculty to engage students according to developmental appropriateness. In the Lower School, material and donation drives are organized by the Director's Council with support from the division director. Additionally, individual classroom teachers may initiate service projects that are generally donation-based. In the Middle School, material and donation drives are organized by the National Junior Honor Society with support from its advisor and the Dean of Student Life. In the Upper School, all students in Grades 9-11 are required to complete a minimum of 20 service hours annually. Hours are monitored by the Director of Experiential and Service Learning. The Key Club, a student service club, coordinates donation and direct service projects.
