Beyond Academics

Learning, No Boundaries
Wilderness Trips
Wilderness Trips are optional, extracurricular programs designed to give opportunities to students who enjoy outdoor adventures of longer duration. Each year a series of trips are put together that span the school calendar, with a mix of activities offered. All Wilderness Trips are developed by an individual staff member and travel arrangements are both internally and externally managed. Examples include dog sledding in Maine, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, canoeing the Rio Grande, and downhill and cross country skiing.
To participate in our Wilderness Trips, please contact Ms. Lynda Hoag at (540) 878-2781.
2009/10 Trips Calendar
Whitewater Rafting
September 26, 2009
Back by popular demand, this wild water trip takes us up to
the beautiful Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania for the entire
day! We ride a raft down the scenic and wild Youghiogheny River,
running class I-IV rapids. Along the way we will have plenty
of time to float the smaller rapids between the larger stuff,
and we also get a chance to leap off of Jump Rock to cool off.
Cost: $70 (includes breakfast donuts on the
ride up & lunch riverside)
Mountain Biking
October 18, 2009
On this day trip we trek to nearby George Washington National
Forest for some intense mountain biking. Vibrant fall colors
await us on our ride, as we climb the mountain, cross streams
and pump our way up to our lunch spot destination. After filling
ourselves on burritos cooked at the top, we enjoy the fast and
extremely exhilarating ride down to base.
Cost: $10 for the burritos-fest lunch (must
have mountain/hybrid bike)
Dog Sledding
January 15-18, 2010
Highland's most popular trip! This adventure has become a yearly
"must do" with students, each trip a different experience every
time around. Come along with us to the northern woods of Maine
where we will bunk outside in canvas tents and mush the dogs.
Students will learn about winter camping, take multiple dog
sledding trips and spend time enjoying the cool outdoor scenery
around Lake Umbagog. Cross country skiing is part of the adventure,
as is learning to tie up the sled team. A story to tell after
every trip!
Cost: $650 + airfare
Canaan Valley Skiing
February 19-21, 2010
We will travel to Canaan Valley, WV for two days of skiing.
This trip includes a day of skiing at Canaan and a day at Timberline.
In addition to downhill skiing, we will be ice skating and offering
tubing to those interested. *If the weather allows, we will
also offer a day of cross country skiing at nearby Whitegrass
Ski Resort. Try this wonderful alternative to mix into your
downhilll experience!
