Middle School

Learning, No Boundaries
Middle School: Grades 5 and 6
Grades 5 and 6 begin the school day in a brief homeroom class period. This homeroom period allows the students to get organized and establish a good start for the day. This is a time to take attendance, organize books and materials, make announcements, and prepare for classes. Following homeroom, Grade 5 students transition into the Middle School program, adopting the routine of changing classrooms/teachers for each subject. All students in Grade 5 take the following core academic classes: Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Spanish and ability-grouped Math. In addition Grade 5 students participate in a PE class each day. Following afternoon homeroom, sixth graders end each school day with competitive sports. In Grade 6, students continue the academic routines established in Grade 5, but add one extra 90-minute laboratory block in Science. In addition to their core classes, fifth and sixth graders take Art, Music, Computer Instruction, Wellness and Library classes each week. Both grades also prepare and present a class play that involves all the students in the grade. At the end of the academic day, Grade 5 students return to a twenty-minute homeroom class to regroup, get afternoon announcements and pack book bags.
