Lower School: Grade 2
There are two classes of Grade 2 students of no more than 18 students in each section. Each class has a certified teacher and a shared assistant.
The core curriculum at this level includes Barton reading and spelling methods and phonics work in conjunction with the Words Their Way word study program. Flexible reading groups use the Harcourt Brace series in addition to the Accelerated Reader program. The Step Up to Writing program facilitates the daily writing which includes creative writing, journal entries and research. Math groups use the Houghton Mifflin textbook and Touch Math. The study of science and social studies topics is implemented through reading and writing workshop activities. Students also visit the science lab once a week for hands on experience with the inquiry-based FOSS kits. The Handwriting Without Tears program completes the Grade 2 academic program.
Grade 2 students visit the computer lab weekly, and have Library and Guidance once a week. Students continue with instruction in Physical Education three times a week. Students also enjoy Music and Art classes twice each week.
Students in the second grade participate in the once a week assembly with their Lower School peers and take several field trips throughout the year. Second graders produce a play every year in addition to performing in the Winter Holiday and Grandparents Day programs. Famous People Day is a special day when students dress up and share information about their favorite famous person in an assembly.
