Students in Highland School's Kindergarten program are divided into two classes of no more than 17 students in each class. There is a certified teacher and assistance in each section.
The Kindergarten curriculum includes phonemic awareness activities, the Open Court phonics-based reading program, and a language experience approach to writing that utilizes the Step Up to Writing program. Hands-on math using Touch Math, Science and Social Studies themes, journal writing and use of the Handwriting Without Tears program complete the curriculum.
In addition to the core curriculum, students enjoy many special area classes. Sports class meets three times each week, along with twice weekly Music and Art classes. Students also have Computer instruction, Guidance and Library class once a week.
Kindergarteners present a class play at the end of the School year, participate in weekly assemblies with fellow students in the Lower School and perform in the Winter Holiday and Grandparents Day programs. The Kindergarten students also take several field trips throughout the year. A favorite trip is to the National Zoo's Conservation Park to observe and learn about endangered animals.
