Share Your Gratitude By Giving to The Highland Fund
"Highland brings out the best in our daughter and it’s evident by her enthusiasm for school. Your dedicated teachers are outstanding and create such a positive learning environment. We are grateful to be part of the Highland community.” JEFF AND GINA THORNBURG
Why should you support The Highland Fund? Throughout our school’s history, our message remains the same: we ask that the first gift that you make to Highland each year be a gift or pledge to The Highland Fund.
Then, and now, our priority remains the same: The Highland Fund is critical to the faculty and programs that form the foundation of all that we do for our students.
Since the founding of Highland School, tax-deductible gifts to The Highland Fund go to:
- support faculty salaries;
- promote individual opportunities for our students in all divisions;
- add new capabilities technology to our classrooms;
- contribute to financial assistance;
- give our school the leading edge in educational excellence.
The Highland Fund makes up a significant portion of the gap between tuition and the cost of educating each student, (approximately 6%). It is a critical part of everything we do. Your support is essential to helping Highland School continue on its path while supporting the programs our students need to be ready for college and life beyond.
The Highland Fund is Highland School’s most important ongoing fundraising activity, raising over $299,000 for the 2015-2016 school year budget. The Highland Fund helps support the school’s operating budget: teacher salaries, classroom supplies, specialist programs, arts, athletics, technology, and more. Because tuition doesn’t cover the entire cost of a Highland education, we ask every family to support The Highland Fund at a level that shows pride in being part of this school community.
100% participation from the Highland community is always our goal; and this year we hope to raise over $300,000. With your help, our school is making great strides toward increasing The Highland Fund giving each year. According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), a mature Annual Fund provides 8-10% of a school’s operating budget. We lag behind that benchmark by having only 6% of our operating budget being provided by The Highland Fund. We can do better!
Gifts range from $5 to over $25,000. We encourage families to consider giving at the Leadership Gift level of $1,000 or more, if they are able. Leadership Gifts help us raise the necessary additional funds for our students above and beyond what tuition covers. Whatever your capacity, we do ask that you make Highland School one of you philanthropic priorities.
Although we must raise tuition to provide for growth of faculty salaries and school programs, no independent school could charge full cost without pricing itself out of the market. We believe a Highland education should be accessible to as many talented young students as possible.
Over 500 members of the Highland community (parents, alumni, faculty, grandparents, friends) make unrestricted donations each year that go directly into our annual operating budget.
Yes! Even though many families make financial sacrifices to pay tuition, it is still important for every member of our Highland community to participate in The Highland Fund at some level to show their support of, and belief in, the School.
Highland can leverage your participation to raise additional funds from granting agencies, foundations, and major donors. In addition to income from The Highland Fund keeping tuition rates at affordable levels, our parent, faculty, staff and trustee participation rates serves as a positive indicator of the school's strength. When Highland applies for grant monies, this participation is often a deciding factor. The higher our participation rates, the greater our chances of earning grant support.
Highland values your support! Every year, we recognize our donors in our Annual Report, both by constituency (parents, alumni or grandparents, for example) and the giving level in which you participate. Specific gift amounts are never listed.
Donors making gifts in honor or memory of a teacher, a family member or someone special are are listed in the Annual Report along with the name of their designee.
The Highland Fund is part of this year’s budget. It is crucial that the Board of Trustees know that we will meet our goal in by December 31 in order to plan for the remainder of the year. While you can give at any time during the school year, we ask that you make your pledge before the end of the calendar year.
