Our Coaches and Trainers

In addition to an experienced staff of coaches, Highland added five new coaches to the Upper School athletic department in 2014. Coach Drew Miller teaches Upper School history and is coaching boys' varsity basketball. Coach Mary McCarthy is coaching our varsity field hockey team. Coach Dana Newton is the assistant coach for our girls' lacrosse team. Coach Michael Black teaches Upper School math and is an assistant coach for boys' varsity lacrosse. Coach Lauren Birkmire joined as coach of our girls' varsity basketball team in 2015.

Upper School Coaches

Coach Mary McCarthy 
Coach McCarthy joined our coaching staff in 2014 after serving as an assistant and head Junior Varsity coach at Louisa High School. McCarthy played four years of field hockey at Randolph Macon College (RMC), where she was all conference three of her four years. She also runs her own summer field hockey camp and is a private trainer for local field hockey players. Coach McCarthy majored in History at RMC and she will be substitute teaching at Highland and will be available as a history tutor during the school year.

Coach Kristen Conques
Kristen Conques is a native of Fairfax. She attended Christopher Newport University and received a B.A. in Early Childhood Psychology with a minor in Philosophy and Religious Studies. Conques captained the lacrosse team to the program’s first two Conference Championships and its first two NCAA appearances. By her senior year, Coach Conques held five school records, was 1st Team All-conference all four 4 years, was named to the All-Region, All-State, All-Academic Teams, and was the first player from the program asked to participate in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Associations North/South All Star Game.

Coach Conques was been with Highland School since 2010 working in Pre-K, 4th and 5th grade Sports, head coach for Girl’s Lacrosse, and assisting in Field Hockey. She has also served as a Head Coach for Cardinal Lacrosse Club since 2008.

Coach Ronnie Ross
This is Ronnie Ross’ eighth year at Highland School. During that time, he has assisted with girls and boys soccer, girls and boys basketball, baseball, and cross country. He has been a part of twelve conference and two state championships. Before coming to Highland, Ross attended Wittenberg University where he played offensive guard for two years on the University’s football team. Besides coaching, Ross is Highland’s English Department Chair and Freshman Dean.

Coach Reynolds Oare
Coach Reynolds Oare is the Head Varsity Boys' and Girls' Soccer Coach. He has been at Highland School since the Fall of 2008. His primary goal is to create an environment in which his players trust the daily process and work hard to improve on and off the field every day. Coach Oare also strives to ensure that the student-athletes respect each other, their opponents, and the officials.In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Oare is also Highland's Middle School Athletic Director and its Assistant Athletic Director.

Coach Gary Hicklin
Coach Hooker heads Highland's varsity girls volleyball program. Coach Hicklin's bio is coming soon  

Coach Brian Hooker
Coach Hooker oversees Highland's boys varsity and junior varsity basketball program. Coach Hooker's complete bio is coming soon.

Carla Richardson - Trainer
Carla Richardson holds a masters degree from ODU in athletic training and has worked primarily at the college level as a trainer for William and Mary and George Mason. She has her Athletic Trainer License from the Virginia Board of Medicine, is certified in CPR and AED and is a member of National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
