Do you have a bright and curious student from Kindergarten to Grade 8 who demonstrates above-average academic abilities or achievement? If so, Highland's Saturday Enrichment Program is designed specifically for you and your child!

High-Level Enrichment Courses Over Five Saturday Mornings
Our highly-respected Saturday Enrichment Program, originally formed in partnership with the University of Virginia, is open to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Parents must submit their application and payment to secure your spot in this enrichment program. Seats are limited and our most popular classes fill quickly. The winter session of classes are held on the Highland School campus and run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for five consecutive Saturdays running January 14 - February 11. Cost is $185 per student. Tuition assistance is available for those who qualify.

Kindergarten/First Grade Classes

Dinosaurs

Join us as we explore the prehistoric world of dinosaurs. We will learn about their habitat,diet, and classification. Dig for fossils and hunt for dinosaur eggs.

Students will learn basic art elements as they explore various art forms through the works of celebrated masters.  They will be introduced to a variety of media as they create their own two-dimensional and three-dimensional designs.  Students will build their awareness of art principles and develop their own art foundations while learning about the fascinating lives and art works of renowned master artists.

Second/Third Grade Classes

Are you a Picasso or a Michelangeo

In this class we will use a variety of mediums to create art as we study the Masters and learn about some major trends in art history. We will sculpt, draw, and paint using mediums from tempra to water color while studying the styles of Michelangelo, da Vinci, Seurat, van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso, and O’Keeffe. We will lie on our backs as we paint as Michelangelo did, decipher da Vinci as we learn his secret of writing his plans backwards, and take a trip to Tahiti and the South Seas as we discover what Gauguin used for his inspiration. My goal is to give students as many ways to create their own art as possible, while learning about many amazing artists, their styles, and the artistic periods during their lifetimes. 

Lego WeDo

Join us as we combine robotics and Legos to explore Lego WeDo, a robotics hardware and software program designed for young children. Students will have an opportunity to construct models using computerized step-by- step directions, which are enhanced by a click and drag program to activate Lego motors and sensors. Students can use mathematical operations and display effects. They can take what they already know about pulleys, gears, motors and sensors to design their own interactive creations! Spanish Culture Club

Join the joy! Do you want to learn how to cook Spanish foods, make arts and crafts or traditional toys and musical instruments? You are going to love the Spanish Culture Club. It is an eclectic blend of culture designed for you to experience the world in your own school.  It will expand your creative mind while getting your hands in the making of piñatas, candy skulls, dolls, guitars, maracas, cooking parrillada (steak and peppers) with guacamole and so much more.  You don't want to miss being part of the club!

Learning about culture builds your confidence in learning Spanish. It expands your horizons to appreciate other ways of living while creating your own masterpieces and building on your artistic knowledge. You cannot truly master a language until you have mastered the cultural contexts.

This popular course is an excellent introduction to programming for students of all ages, with no coding experience needed. This course incorporates fun, visual features to teach the systematic computing language, Python. While learning to code in Python, students will be able to observe their code in an illustrative patterns and designs.

We integrate principles of art/design, computer science, and geometry all tied into one course! The programming concepts covered include: Boolean’s Variables, Conditionals, Conditional Statements, Loops, and Functions. This course is basic and fun for non-STEM majors and people currently introduced to STEM.

Animation

This camp will teach students the process of frame by frame digital animation. It will go through the basics of Adobe Animate CC, and will give students a taste of what it's like to be an independent animator. The course will go through every stage of the cartoon process, from sound recording to exporting the finished product.

This Saturday Enrichment class offers extra Spanish lessons to students who are interested in getting a head-start on foreign language! Children’s brains are like sponges; they absorb almost everything thrown their way. Because of this characteristic, it is easier for children to acquire a foreign language at a young age. We will explore different aspects of language and culture in a fun and positive light using crafts, games, and other fun-filled lessons.
