In October, five Upper School students in Highland's Leadership Certificate program took to the stage in The Rice Theater for this fall's round of 'This I Believe' speeches.
The assignment asks students to reflect on experiences that have shaped their beliefs. Each students' speeches offered insights into the experiences that have shaped them to this point in their young lives.
The students were joined by Upper School Social Sciences teacher Doug Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson, who has taught at Highland since 1995, mined his own experiences with students that have shaped his own outlook and approach to teaching.
The assembly is the culmination of a project of Highland's Leadership Studies program and draws inspiration from a series of radio essays originally started in 1951 by Edward R. Murrow. True to the original radio essays, our speakers are asked to reflect on their lives, families, and interests and share something of themselves in their speeches.
